As a follow-up event to our convention this past spring, we are organizing a game day: this time, nothing but the games! After successfully running remote gaming events at Let's Roll, Cyber Wars, and Cyber Wars Redux, we decided (along with some friends) to run a few more.
To quote the Bard: "The game's afoot!" (Well - it looks like about a foot on my screen anyway...) It may not be in-person gaming, but there's no reason not to get a game in. Come join us for a few hours, pandemic be damned! (But safely, of course: all participants are required to stay well out of musket range, at the far end of an internet connection!)
Interested players should contact the organizer at ilg21@yahoo.com. Please indicate which games you are interested in playing. Seating is first-come, first serve, and will be limited. Games will be conducted using remote conferencing platforms such as Skype and Zoom, based on the game master's preference. Details for connecting will be sent to players once their interest and participation has been confirmed. Participation is free - if you have a web browser, a microphone, and an internet connection, you can play! Participants under 16 years of age should be co-located with a responsible adult (or at least a parent or legal guardian... ;-)
If you would be interested in running an event at future game days, using miniatures and web cameras, or a virtual platform such as Tabletop Simulator, please contact us at the e-mail given above.
NOTE: A running report on the games is now available here with pictures and brief descriptions from the game masters.
[F1] The Battle of Brustem, 1467: Charles the Bold of Burgundy attempts to put down the rebellious burghers of Liege, supported by their French allies. Problem is, they have holed up behind trenches and marshy ground, where they may be a challenge to get at! Late-medieval mayhem in all its glory!
[F2] The Battle of Yakubovo: July 30, 1812, Napoleon sent Macdonald's X Corps d'armee towards Riga and dispatched another corps under Marshal Oudinot to take Saint Petersburg. To counter this French move against the city that effectively served as the second Russian capital, Barclay de Tollly has broken off Wittgenstein's I Infantry Corps, accompanied by cavalry and cossacks, to intervene. This is a learning game of Et Sans Resultat! If you have not had an opportunity to play ESR, now is the time to come and push some virtual troops. If you cannot play the whole game or you just want to stop by and say hello, please stop by our Discord server at: https://discord.gg/M3Z9mjQ. Players use this same link and search for server Yakubovo.
[SA1] Battle of Sabbath Day Point: March 1757, the wilderness north of Lake George. A French force under Ensign de Corbiere has been ordered south to scout the British defences. Unbeknownst to them Colonel Munro, in command of Fort William Henry, has sent out a reconnaissance party in canoes under Colonel John Parker.
[SA2] Nine Men's Misery..... or is it?: On March 26, 1676 during King Philip's War, Captain Michael Pierce led approximately 60 Plymouth Colony colonial troops and 20 Wampanoag Christian Indians in pursuit of Narragansett Indians who had burned several Rhode Island towns and attacked Plymouth, Mass. as part of King Philips War. Pierce's troops caught up with the Narragansett Indians but were ambushed. He had sent word to Providence that he was in need of assistance. Historically Capt. Edmunds waited until after Services on Sunday to muster his men and aid Capt. Pierce, only to reach Pierce in time to bury the dead. The history behind Nine Men's Misery is varied, the accepted story is that some of Pierce's men got separated and were ambushed and caught. These nine men were tortured and killed by the Narragansett.
In this scenario, Edmunds musters his men right away and sends an advance scout of nine men (one of the variants of the story). The nine get ambushed and hold up against and behind an outcropping of rocks, fighting to the last man. Edmund's men arrive (historical story is that they didn't make it on time), but are cut off from the nine... can they save them before they are wiped out?
[SA6] The Battle of Klyastitsy: July 31, 1812, yesterday, Legrand's French division of Oudinot's II Corps d'armee clashed with the advanced guard of Wittgenstein's I Infantry Corps, the French were pressed and Wittgenstein was bolstered to renew his offensive today. Both sides are rushing forward, the battle turns on whether Klysastitsy is open as a route to Saint Petersburg for the French. Rules: "Et Sans Resultat!" [SA3] Ball's Bluff, 1861: Welcome to Balls Bluff - the Union defeat you never heard of. Take a chance on one of my crazed ACW scenarios! The room opens at 2:30 PM to answer any general questions. At 3:00 PM we will do a formal debriefing and select sides. Familarity with the rules is a plus, but not required. I like to run fun games where - like in real life - anything can happen. So... The rules are NOT turn based. Expect surprises. In addition, random elements are added to the Union side to simulate historical events.
[SA4] Operation Compass - Attack on Raggruppamento Maletti: After the declaration of war in June 1940, the Italian forces in North Africa moved aggressively into Egypt. Before long, the shoe was on the other foot - in December of 1940, the British launched Operation Compass, pushing the Italians back in a dramatic fashion. This is a what-if scenario depicting combat between the ad-hoc Italian mechanized formation, Raggruppamento Maletti, and the counter-attacking British Western Desert Force in the end of 1940 and the early days of 1941. Rules are operational-level, allowing players to command divisional-sze formation, and to recreate a full-size battle. The game system tracks all fuel and ammunition.
[SA5] Break the Blockade (Age of Sail): Two Squadrons of raiders, one American and one French, have made rendezvous at an isolated island in the Caribbean. They had planned to raid a homeward bound English convoy but the Royal Navy has uncovered their plans and they must stand off their attack or escape.
[SA7] The Battle of Yakubovo: July 30, 1812, Napoleon sent Macdonald's X Corps d'armee towards Riga and dispatched another corps under Marshal Oudinot to take Saint Petersburg. To counter this French move against the city that effectively served as the second Russian capital, Barclay de Tollly has broken off Wittgenstein's I Infantry Corps, accompanied by cavalry and cossacks, to intervene. Rules: "Et Sans Resultat!" [SN1] Holding the Line - Le Cateau, 1914: On August 26, 1914, the British Expeditionary Force fights a delaying action against overwhelming numbers of advancing Germans at Le Cateau, in France. The Great War has not yet turned into a stalemate, and there aren't any trenches to hide in! Although the left flank of the BEF position is badly outnumbered, they do have help from Sordet's French cavalry corps. This game depicts a small-unit action against the advancing "Huns" in a coop-play format, where all players take the part of the Allied forces. The question is: how long can they hold the line?
[SN2] Battle of Kissoue: In June of 1941, the Allies based in Palestine pushed into Syria, aiming at Damascus. Britain sought a way to keep Germany from gaining access to Iraqi oil, while Free French leaders suggested that the Vichy French forces in the Levant would join the Allies if given a good opportunity to do so. The result was a battle featuring (among others) the Free French on the Allied side, against the Vichy French fighting for the Axis. This obscure battle combines outmoded armor and colorful "colonial" troop types with more typical early-WWII forces. The game is conducted using an operational-level computer-assisted system which lets players fight out the entire action, commanding battalions as the maneuver units while tracking ammunition and supply. If you love the French, you can be happy playing either side; and if you hate them, then - hey! - you get to kill Frenchmen! (And you probably never even knew that it happened...) What's not to like?
[SN3] The Battle of Klyastitsy: July 31, 1812, yesterday, Legrand's French division of Oudinot's II Corps d'armee clashed with the advanced guard of Wittgenstein's I Infantry Corps, the French were pressed and Wittgenstein was bolstered to renew his offensive today. Both sides are rushing forward, the battle turns on whether Klysastitsy is open as a route to Saint Petersburg for the French.
